Men-made and natural calamities have historically imperiled Human Security in Bangladesh. The country came into being after a brutal Civil War in 1971. The 1971 war took a very heavy toll on the civilians. Political instability creating a complicated mix of social and economic crises remained a part of the national life through the first three decades of Bangladesh’s independent life. Freedom of speech for minorities and dissidents and vulnerability of women and children to violence and exploitation remained some of the significant Human Security risks in Bangladesh. Natural calamities such as floods, depletion of Bio-Climatic resources and water scarcity are some other notable Human Security risks in certain parts of the country.
